HANDS AND FEET

When I first started drawing hands, I used to just create all of these blocks and cylinders and
would try to work the hand out geometrically. Naturally after the third or fourth attempt, I fell
asleep from the boredom. There are many ways to draw hands.

As Life dictates, however, most of us have to work and struggle for a living and we each have
our own little quirky ways of creating hands and feet. Here is how I do it for BOTH feet and

DRAWING HANDS

It sits there perched atop our body like a periscope sitting high on a two legged submarine. It is
the pilothouse on the steamboat. It sits there and surveys—turning this way and that on its
biological turret. It takes in an makes daily assessments and then orders the carrying out of those
assessments. Simplicity is its design and what is the head but a carrying case for the mind.


It is the most important part of our body. It is our command centre. It is the head of project “us”.
Without the head to control the mechanical means to express ourselves, we would not, could not
be artists. Yet we go through our lives not really thinking about how important this spherically
shaped piece of hardware actually is. We are only sitting here communicating because the brain
that is encased in this writer’s head is allowing the typing to take place.

DRAWING CHILDREN

Children are an act of motion. An energetic burst of cautionless energy exploding forth like a
nova. There is no stopping them. There is no controlling them. We think that we know them
because we were all kids once but as Peter Pan points out, you lose something in the translation
when you become an adult. We watch them watching us wanting to be them while they are
watching us-- wanting to be us. Children are our glimpse into a lost past and a hopeful glimpse
into a possible future. Will they one day take care of us, raise their own children and start the
cycle all over again? We hope so.
